A Zumba Party with a Twist

My 10 year old daughter loves to dance. She dances with or without music, alone or with others, and even in the middle of dinner. We have the Zumba teacher at the gym to thank for this. Because of her, my daughter has so much fun every week in her class and she has yet to miss a single one. Thus, the idea of a Zumba party came up pretty quickly and once it

was approved by the birthday girl, the ideas were endless. So much so, that at some point my husband said, “Is this is birthday party or a Bat Mitzvah? No we are not doing fruit dancers on sticks, nor are we doing neon sprinkled marshmallows. These little girls are ten years old.

They’re thrilled with chips and pretzels.” My partner of course disagreed, we plan parties afterall! The reality is, a party idea can be taken and implemented on various levels depending on the budget and type of party. So yes, I had many ideas, but in the end decided to bank them for another event.

So how does one funk up and pull together a Zumba theme? Personalized water bottles for during the workout and the lootbag, neon coloured tableware, and a cake depicting Zumba dancers, of course. But, I can safely say, the most successful part of the Zumba theme was the dancing and the fact that the birthday girl felt comfortable with the instructor and knew all her moves. There were times during the class where the instructor left my daughter standing in front leading the group which in turn made her feel very special on her special day. This by far was the best part.

The unplanned and totally awesome addition was the Zumba teacher’s surprise. She brought her friend who just so happened to be the most amazing face painter anyone has ever seen. Everything she made was a masterpiece and it was all done in a timely manner so there was not much waiting. All the girls were so happy with their stunning makeovers. And then the most random thing ever…The Zumba teacher began braiding hair during Zumba breaks! Never in a million years did I expect that to happen but it sure was a nice touch.

After the party, my daughter came to me and said “Mommy, that was the best party ever. Thank you so much for all your hard work.” That was music to my ears but little does she know it was a piece of cake, but let's keep that between us *wink*
